To become a CNA in Texas, students must complete 60 hours of classroom training, 40 hours of clinical training, and pass a written and skills exam. HHSC has created a computer-based training program that nurse aide trainees can use to complete the 60-hour classroom training online. After a trainee completes the CBT and prints their certificate, they must present the certificate to the approved school prior to starting their 40-hour clinical portion of the training. The NATCEP will review the certificate presented by the trainee to determine if it is the completion certificate from HHSC’s CBT classroom training. The NATCEP will also require each trainee to complete a written test and skills demonstration of knowledge acquired in the online course prior to beginning the clinical training. Students will commute off campus to the assigned clinical facility to engage in their clinical rotation. Students will utilize everything they have learned in the computer-based training and apply it in the clinical setting while providing direct care.
